I was a little concerned with the reviews about dryness and bland flavor and colour. Neither dryness or color was an consequence. I substituted 1/2 c of melted butter for veg. oil, and put in 3 T of cocoa. This was a moist, succulent cake, the entire family LOVED it. Served with my own icing.
03/24/2007
Oh yes - this is the recipe for me, a busy mom who needs shortcuts. I just fabricated these for a bake sale. The recipe makes 24+one(for the cook, of course)cupcakes. They are incredibly moist, dumbo, and RED. My modifications: -white cake mix -3T of cocoa -1 total oz of red coloring I chose to get with another frosting (Cream Cheese Frosting II from this site) because I adopt more of a dumbo cream cheese taste and texture. It'southward perfect with these cupcakes.

I took this cake to an part potluck for Christmas and it was gone in 10 minutes. Anybody LOVED it!! It was moist and wonderful!! I was skeptical about the frosting but it was a refreshing treat, light and merely right!! Excellent recipe, I will make it again and over again and everyone will think I worked hard doing it! Easy and excellent!!

I have never had whatsoever other Red Velvet cake, so I don't know what to compare it to. But at any rate, THIS IS SOOOO GOOD! I did make a few changes suggested by other reviewers. I used 4 tablespoons of cocoa, one tablespoon of vanilla, and two 1oz bottles of the food coloring. I also used the moist yellowish block mix. I didn't have time to brand the icing, so I used a store bought whipped cream cheese icing. I put some chopped pecans on meridian. It was wonderful!

I have never liked cherry-red velvet cake until I made this recipe!!!!! I made information technology for my young man'due south birthday considering it'southward his favorite and nosotros both couldn't finish eating information technology. I served information technology to several people and anybody said it was the all-time they ever had. I used a more than traditional cream cheese frosting so I tin can't annotate on the frosting. I don't know why it has gotten some reviews that it's bland because mine turned out absolutely moist and delicious. Wonderful recipe!!!!!!
01/15/2006
This is a so-and so cake. Like shooting fish in a barrel enough for a beginner cook, or a person who doesn't take enough time to actually brand a traditional Red velvet cake w/ a butter roux frosting
08/06/2005
I liked this recipe alot. I used twice the cocoa, twice the blood-red food coloring, and I added vanilla extract. I did non make the icing. I used shop bought foam cheese icing.
12/01/2005
Ruddy Velvet cake is a family favorite, and this recipe is the easiest I've e'er used! I double up on the cocoa, and use store-bought icing. We Love it!
08/20/2009
I am not from the south, nor am I an expert on what a Cerise Velvet Cake is supposed to take like. My merely experience with Ruddy Velvet Cake is i lushious feel at the Merits Jumper Restaurant which prompted me to look for a recipe. I am an adept at knowing a delicious dessert when I gustatory modality i and this one is amazing! I added 4 Tbsp Cocoa as other reviewers suggested and one tsp vanilla excerpt. This was absolutely delicious. I did non utilize the frosting. Instead I made my own cream cheese frosting (1-8oz Foam Cheese, i stick margarine, 2 cups powdered sugar, and 1 tsp vanilla). I fabricated this for the function equally cupcakes and also for my mother in law'southward altogether. Everyone raved nigh this and several wanted more than than I had. I plan on making this for my niece'southward baby shower this weekend and can't expect to devour again. Cheers and so much for a really easy amazing recipe.
08/03/2002
This recipe is fantastic! Admittedly the best red velvet cake I've ever tasted! Thank you lot so much for sharing this succulent, moist and easy recipe. I've been asked all the time to bring this delicious dessert to family gatherings, functions, pot lucks, etc. My friends/family simply dearest it! Thanks over again!
04/07/2007
Very disappointing. The only thing similar to a ruby velvet cake about this cake was the color.
03/xix/2009
My sister requested a RV cake for her birthday. I'd never made 1 before. I used this recipe and made a few modifications (see below) suggested in various reviews. Also, I used the Cream Cheese Frosting Two recipe from this site rather than the one listed with the cake recipe. The cake was admittedly delicious!! Everyone loved it!! * Duncan Hines Golden Yellow Block Mix * Chocolate Fudge Instant Pudding (instead of vanilla) * 2 oz Red Food Coloring (2 Bottles instead of ane) * 4 Tbsp. Cocoa instead of 1 * Cream Cheese Frosting 2 Recipe for the Icing (instead of the one with this cake recipe) --> When I added the vanilla, I over-poured by a just a bit on purpose. This is a keeper!! Savor
12/23/2012
This is okay. It works. C'mon, this is a cake mix, Not a "from scratch" cake and every bit such it shouldn't be compared against the from scratch version. A little brusk on flavor maybe, but and then I find "the real thing" to have the same issue (except for the McCormick recipe). My criticism and so, is not so much how it rates compared to a from scratch Cherry-red Velvet cake from your childhood you recollect your grandma making and so much as I don't like the big holes that appeared. Not attractive. But put this in a pretty cupcake liner (broiled as cupcakes virtually 22 minutes), superlative with foam cheese frosting, and you've got a legitimately passable Ruddy Velvet Cake.
01/11/2008
Excellent! Fabricated the post-obit revisions - used iv Tablespoons cocoa, added 1 teaspoon vanilla - came out a tiny chip dry due to extra cocoa, then I might attempt adding a tablespoon melted butter in addition to the oil side by side time. Used cocoa instead of flour to 'flour' the greased pan - looks much better with a chocolate cake. Besides, don't forget if you employ a dark coated pan, you may want to reduce the oven temp. I used 2 9-inch nighttime pans and cooked at 335 for 35 minutes. Also used the cream cheese frosting II from allrecipes. Definitely a keeper!
06/07/2010
I gave information technology a 5 star with these changes: Add 4 tablespoons cocoa (I followed the suggestions from other bakers on the review) and increase water to 1 1/three cups, and bake for 37 min. I used Cream Cheese Frosting Two instead. Everyone at my party said information technology was divine.
03/07/2012
I'thou rating this cake in the center of the road. I'll explicate. The cake beingness a box mix, mixed with other ingredients and non abode made from scratch was still actually practiced. Not that difficult to make or follow to a T. I rate the cake a 5 star. I tin't rate the frosting with the block very well to what I was expecting. While information technology was also easy to assemble and ease of the ingredients. I didn't similar the fact, that it didn't sense of taste like foam cheese frosting with the listed ingredients. My daughter liked it merely to say information technology was foam cheese frosting, I honestly can't. It was a pudding frosting. Information technology didn't accept the correct way of flavor of a true cream cheese frosting....even with the cream cheese in the frosting. The pudding mix, totally over powered and masked the flavor intended for a red velvet block with traditional cream cheese frosting. Distressing. It really didn't do justice to my taste buds and I wasn't thoroughly impressed with it. I am sorry I didn't similar the frosting flavor at all. I'll make the block again but not the frosting.
03/12/2010
Used a different foam cheese frosting but the cake was succulent & moist. Kept very well in the fridge besides. UPDATE: Practice NOT use sugar gratis pudding mix. Y'all'll get a completely different block texture, I actually concluded up throwing them away.
12/22/2010
This cake is bully. I did what others suggested and added more than cocoa, but no other changes. I fabricated this twice, one time with regular cream cheese frosting and once with the frosting included in the recipe. Me (and my kids) actually did non like the frosting from this recipe. Its pretty bland...I won't make it again.
01/07/2010
This cake is peachy! I have tried a couple of ruby velvet cake from scratch earlier. This is very easy & moist! I did use other review'due south recommendation. (2 oz. cherry-red food coloring, chocolate fudge pudding pkg., and 4 Tbsp cocoa) Very easy & moist! I didn't like the frosting equally much though.
03/18/2011
YUM! I similar to decorate with fresh sliced strawberries. Ive used the frosting recipe many times for other cakes, changing the pudding flavor to whatever goes with the block I accept.
08/25/2010
Perfect for a quick unproblematic ruby-red velvet recipe. My friend requested red velvet for her birthday and I didn't have much time to exercise a whole thing from scratch, plant and used this recipe. I was really happy with it. Every bit suggested I doubled the cocoa pulverisation and doubled the food coloring. It was moist and chocolaty. Information technology was a hit with all my guests.
02/11/2007
At outset, I was unimpressed by this cake recipe. I tripled the cocoa powder, every bit one reviewer suggested, and the result was gorgeously night red cupcakes (baked for fifteen minutes at 350). I as well used half butter, half vegetable oil to encourage moistness. Unfortunately, the flavor was very bland. Information technology tasted just like boxed cake mix, except not equally skillful. But my co-workers did like the block, so I tried it 1 more time, this fourth dimension with the original vegetable oil but FOUR tablespoons of cocoa. I really liked how this picked up the flavor a bit for me, and information technology was more moist this way.
x/31/2009
I fabricated this block and used my own foam cheese frosting recipe. It was ok, just probably non something I'd make again. I concluded upward using three times the cocoa powder and some vanilla extract, after the batter didn't gustation even remotely similar chocolate. The cake was moist and light, just it but tasted like something was missing...
04/23/2010
Practiced cake with minor modifications. Added 4 T cocoa and 1 T vanilla. Also frosted with cream cheese frosting II (from this site). Was perfect.
07/03/2002
Husband's favorite cake is Red Velvet and this matched the best he ever had. Very moist and delicious. Thank you Allrecipe.com
02/sixteen/2003
The block did not take a dominant flavor. It was also too dense and not as moist as most other cake recipes.
03/26/2010
I used butter instead and it turned out smashing! Everyone loved this 1. I would utilize regular buttercream frosting next time.
05/11/2010
I honey red velvet block and this was my first time making it. Information technology turned out crawly!! I didnt have the instant pudding mix and so I used one of those individual chocolate pudding cups and information technology withal turned out great. Used store bought cream cheese frosting, mmmmm cant look to brand again!!
01/29/2004
Cute cake but not very flavorful. My family unit prefers the typical cream cheese frosting.
ten/21/2007
i've made this about 15 times now and anybody who'south tasted information technology loved information technology!
12/25/2005
This was a great recipe. The family raved virtually it.
02/14/2008
I'1000 no Red Velvet cake adept, only I thought this was a good cake. I used a whole bottle of blood-red food coloring (the tiny ones that come in a ready) and information technology wasn't enough to get a rich red color-- more a dark-brown ruby-red, FYI.
07/xvi/2010
Great flavor, easy, and soo moist, much meliorate and easier than my old red velvet recipe.
08/23/2009
I think this is as close to a true reddish velvet cake as you lot tin get while using a boxed cake mix. I consider myself a RV connoisseur but a novice cake baker and then the idea of making a RV cake from scratch seemed daunting. I followed this recipe exactly except for using 3 T of cocoa powder and a different icing recipe as suggested by other reviewers. This cake was fabulous! Everyone who tasted information technology loved information technology and it was moist and succulent. I will definitely exist making this again!
09/06/2008
Easy to make. I used white block instead of yellow, and too doubled the cocoa and used 2oz of red food coloring. The cake came out more than of a pinkish color than red but withal looked dainty. Made tons of icing! Overall tasty!
02/21/2011
My cake turned out dry and a weird texture. I don't know if I did something incorrect or what. I made my grandma's recipe and used it instead. It tasted alright merely I needed it to be moister. Thanks I don't know why it turned out dry out.
03/12/2008
I fabricated a blue velvet block! It came out quite tasty, though the flavor was non exactly like other reddish velvet cakes I've had.
06/30/2011
The cake itself was good. The frosting was but meh. Didn't matter - people at the role ate it up!
02/fourteen/2009
My starting time Cerise Velvet block and information technology was a HUGE striking! My family loved it. I read the reviews and added three T of cocoa and ii tubes of carmine food coloring, and the colour and taste was amazing! I fabricated heart shaped cupcakes for Valentine's Day and information technology was Love all around! Thanks for such a great and piece of cake recipe!!!
12/22/2011
I decided to finally brand a Red Velvet Block to see what the hype was all most...Boy, was this a hit in my family unit...I gave a slice to my dghtr to take to piece of work and it flew off her plate equally soon as she unwrapped information technology...I drove to my other dghtr's workplace at luncheon time and same reaction... Everybody just Looooved it!!!! Great, Great, Peachy Recipe!! Simply thing was I used the recipe from Foam Cheese Frosting II and that was Crawly as well!!! This is at present our family unit favorite!
07/05/2010
very good recipe. used recipe to brand a bundt cake. but instead of the recipe'due south frosting, i glazed information technology with the German Chocolate Cake Frosting Ii. i didn't add any coconut or pecans to the frosting. however i did sprinkle a little kokosnoot flakes on top. it was delicious.
12/23/2004
pretty proficient overall, a little dry out, nothing special. A good basic red velvet recipe
08/17/2009
Yes, I have some guilt proverb I made a crimson velvet block when a block mix was involved, only my wife loved it. Red velvet has been her favorite her whole life. When she tried the first bite, she did a little trip the light fantastic toe. That, my friends, equals five stars in my book.
01/14/2007
ver delicous and moist cake, I didnt employ the frosting so I cant speak for that and I inverse the pudding to chocolate ( thats all I had) and it was ver adept. Thanks
ten/17/2002
I made this cake yesterday based on the reviews. The cake is pretty (overnice coloring) and quite moist, but likewise dense. Also, I constitute the cake to be a little bland (not the traditional Southern Red Velvet cake gustation). I made 2 9" layers and divide the layers. Very easy to make.
01/15/2003
Delicious, moist cake! I used ii 9" round pans and got two huge layers of cake. My husband couldn't finish raving about this block. I used my own icing recipe. The only matter I didn't similar about this cake is that information technology turned out more orange than blood-red - even later using all the ruby nutrient coloring I had. This is definitely a keeper though!
01/01/2010
This block was very moist. I fabricated changes as the others suggested. I added 4tbsp of cocoa, ane tsp of vanilla extract and i/3 cup of reduced fat olive oil mayo. I made icing with a tub of whip cream, sugar, and 8oz of cream cheese.
xi/28/2009
Great and easy recipe for a novice bakery such as myself. The cake was moist and was a striking with anybody on Thanksgiving. I took the advice of previous reviewers and used 4 tbps of cocoa powder and tad bit more than food coloring. I used store bought cream cheese icing and whipped information technology up (using a mixer) with a few drops of vanilla extract. Volition definitely make again.
12/30/2009
I gave four because of the changes. I used the oil suggestion and half the red. The cake was moist and perfect. Next fourth dimension I will try beet juice. I used Cream cheese frosting 2 from this sight with recomendations. I would like to make iii smaller layers next time and double the frosting. The just complaint was more frosting. Information technology was eaten up quick.
07/26/2006
yum! definately doesn't taste like boxed cake mix. information technology is denser and more than flavorful. my family unit loved information technology. i iced it with chocolate butter icing.
xi/28/2001
Thanks for this recipe! I accept ever loved red velvet but nearly recipes I've used always turn out dry. I did not have a yellow cake mix the get-go time I used this so I substituted a french vanilla cake mix and it turned out great. My brother-in-law even said that it was "near every bit skilful" as his nifty-aunt'due south (she was known as the great melt in the family unit!!!) Thank you again for sharing this recipe!
01/15/2004
We thought this cake was okay. We were disapointed with the frosting. Information technology but tasted like instant pudding and Cool Whip. I will stick to the traditional cream cheese frosting when making a red velvet cake.
01/26/2010
These were good. Let me clarify, the block was fine. The icing on the other hand was a huge bomb and I only barely saved it with some additions. I should take taken listen of the thinly-veiled warnings when everyone who gave it 5 stars used their own frosting recipe. If y'all want to basically top the cupcake with pudding, and so by all meals follow the recipe.
09/xx/2002
Very moist... frosting was delicious!
06/xxx/2007
I used this recipe to make red velvet cupcakes. I made the cream cheese frosting from scratch from a recipe I too found on allrecipes.com. My only suggestion is to apply choclate pudding mix instead of vanilla. Otherwise, this is a great recipe that I've used over and over again!
03/30/2010
Yummy cake!!!
12/08/2008
Having never made an RV cake I institute this recipe to exist easy and very tasteful. Notwithstanding as far as I could find, the pudding but comes in ane and 1 1/2 ounce sizes. I used one of the 1 i/2 oz containers for the block and constitute the recipe to be fine. However the frosting left a corking deal to exist desired. Next time I will use a different recipe for the frosting. BTW, I used sugar-gratuitous instant pudding and reduced sugar cake mix for a very low sugar cake.
10/28/2006
Excellent recipe! I didn't have any red food coloring, but had green, and then mine was more like "green velvet cake"! Thank you for sharing.
xi/22/2002
The cake was very moist and dumbo. The second time I made it I doubled the cocoa. Just I had trouble with the frosting. It tasted practiced, but I fabricated the recipe twice and boh times the frosting had little lumps in information technology. I tried creaming the foam cheese and instant pudding together before I added the milk only information technology didn't seem to help. I did, withal, like the season.
03/21/2009
GREAT RECIPE!! it was my get-go time making a red velvet cake, and now me and my family are huge fans! I upped the cocoa powder to 4T equally others suggested, which gave information technology the perfect combination of chocolate and vanilla. The cake was moist and looked beautiful! TIP: for the frosting, make sure that the cream cheese is at room temperature and it should be beaten before added the milk, otherwise, in that location volition exist lumps, which are stubborn to become out. The frosting did have a slightly yellow hue because of the pudding, but information technology tasted delicious--fingerlickin good!!
03/09/2009
This recipe has been a hitting with my friends! It is a moist, piece of cake to make, and delicious block and icing! I add together a piddling extra cocoa, just that'southward it. Amazing block! If y'all are expecting the "typical" dense, and slightly biting red velvet block, this isn't the way to go, but for a succulent and similar alternative, try this recipe!
03/02/2010
Tasty cake and piece of cake to make, but non at all like traditional red velvet. This cake was moist and fluffy, whereas ruddy velvet is supposed to be dense. Even so a good cake, but I agree that the merely thing this block has in common with red velvet is the color
02/15/2007
This was a swell cake - very moist. Made information technology for Valentine's 24-hour interval. My boys loved it!
08/02/2005
This recipe turned out cracking! I used more than an ounce of red nutrient coloring and the color turned out perfect! Will be making this one once more!
05/06/2010
This recipe was simply like my Mama used to make. Let me tell you lot, it was really adept. I did do something unheard of with Red Velvet and that is add coconut to the icing.... even improve!
03/03/2010
I know this isn't exactly "Existent" cherry-red velvet cake...but it tastes really, really, really, really, really, really, ridiculously adept. So, really...who cares? Make it, I say. (Like other reviewers, I used a unlike cream cheese frosting recipe from this site.)
02/22/2009
We did bask the cake (simply just after we abased the thought that it was the same kind of red velvet cake that we're used to), but not the frosting. We all much prefer the heavier, more than traditional cream cheese frosting. I'll get in again, but substitute the other frosting.
12/26/2012
This isn't a bad cake only it isn't much of a red velvet cake. To me it tasted more similar a reddish yellow cake, I could still gustation the yellow cake mix. I made information technology with my girl and it was moist and pretty but it didn't sense of taste like red velvet to me it simply looked like i. I would reccomend trying a chocolate/ devils food cake mix if you want to use a cake mix to make a cherry-red velvet block or fifty-fifty simply adding some extras to a red velvet mix.
05/01/2010
I was lookingor for something more than a cake mix and red food coloring, thought I am sure it ends upwards beingness quite tasty.
03/16/2000
light still flavorful, this cake is easy to make and has a unique flavor. although i simply used 1/3 cup of oil, just it notwithstanding turned out smashing:)
07/02/2007
A coworker reauested this for her altogether. I garnished it with strawberries and chocolate shavings and got rave reviews!
01/06/2010
Very easy, moist & yummy!!
05/22/2012
Practiced, but is this your recipient
11/21/2009
I fabricated these for my daughter's birthday and they were very practiced. I added ane actress tbs of cocoa pulverisation and ane tsp vanilla since some of the others had mentioned a lack of flavor. They were light, moist and delicious. The icing was good too and non likewise sweet.
06/13/2010
love the cake, love the frosting!
02/19/2007
Dandy tasting cake but didn't similar the color it turned out. I would use the recipe again but simply leave out the food coloring and call it a "NOT red-velvet block" cake!
03/06/2010
Terrible gustation and texture. I allowed the recipe exactly. The simply thing I liked was the colour.
12/12/2012
This was a great recipe. I increased the cocoa to ii tablespoons, and used a basic cream cheese frosting in lieu of the one in the recipe.
02/xi/2010
Great cake later on the recommended changes, FABULOUS icing. For those who didn't similar the icing my judge is they were looking for the traditional foam cheese frosting. I don't intendance for traditional cream cheese frosting and I LOVED this. It was lighter and fluffier & had a taste somewhere b/twn the cream cheese and the pudding. I usually scrape whatever icing off my cake and only eat the cake. This was one where I could accept eaten just the frosting. I volition use this frosting recipe over and over! I took the communication of others and doubled the red food coloring, used chocolate pudding for the vanilla in the cake, used 4 Tbsp cocoa powder and used melted butter instead of veggie oil. It tasted bully - equivalent to a 4 star in my volume, but since in that location were so many changes made I took a star off. I wish I could have given information technology a three.5 though because I was wild for the frosting.
xi/18/2009
Needed a quick ruddy block, for my vampire themed party. I wanted to endeavour the other recipe from scratch, merely I didn't have time to do a test batch, and so I just went with this one. I ended upward making cupcakes they turned out slap-up! Everybody loved them. This is nonetheless some other great "doctored" block mix on this site!!!
04/23/2009
I had never made scarlet velvet before, but it is tradition for his mom to make him one on his birthday. So this year I made it using this recipe and it was a total success! I substituted the choclate pudding in the cake and upped the cocoa every bit suggested. The only small-scale thwarting was the frosting. I wish I had listened to other reviewers, so side by side time I volition change it up.
08/15/2009
Keeping in heed that this recipe is made from a box cake, it's pretty good. It'southward dumbo and flavorful. It still has that box cake/chemical season that you CANNOT mask no matter how difficult you try - and then if you accept that this is a box block recipe, you will be happy with the results.
04/06/2010
I made this for christmas and information technology was the best red velvet block I e'er had. Everyone went back for seconds!
09/02/2003
I thought the cake was very bland. Zilch like the red velvet cakes I have had before. I won't be making this ane once again.
12/23/2008
This is dissimilar from the red velvet cake my great-grandmother used to make with a very thick, sweet cream cheese frosting. While that is still my favorite, I'grand giving this v stars, because my daughter loves this cake and ever requests it. She doesn't usually swallow icing, just loves this lighter, fluffier frosting. So you merely need to know that up front, so you lot can decide if you want to endeavor this or use a heavier, more traditional frosting.
11/22/2009
I should have known better than to try to skip steps with the cake mix in this recipe. I followed this recipe to the alphabetic character, other than tripling the cocoa, and it was completely tasteless. Neither the flavour nor texture were similar truthful red velvet block. I liked the fluffier version of cream cheese frosting, but my family unit didn't. If I were to ever try this again, I would definitely utilize chocolate pudding in the cake instead of vanilla. But I recall I'd be meliorate off with a from-scratch recipe, no cake mix involved.
12/27/2009
I made this recipe for a Christmas dessert, and it worked pretty well. The cake, itself, was pretty tasty. It was quite moist once it was baked. I did have issues with the batter being extremely thick, which meant that it didn't become mixed likewise as it should have. I ended up with several white spots throughout my cake. My family thought it was purposeful, but it would have been amend if the dough wasn't as thick.
11/27/2009
I made this for Thanksgiving dessert and everyone said the cakes was really moist. It wasn't also light but this wasn't the typical corrupt red velvet cake simply it's just as proficient. The only differences to my recipe was to use two oz of crimson food coloring, 4 TBLSP of cocoa powder, and I used a premade whipped cream cheese frosting. I was going to make a dissimilar frosting from this website but I needed to save time. Oh, and make sure to completely cool the cake for an hour before you put the frosting. Next time I will make frosting myself for much better results, if possible.
03/03/2009
I got to practise cake honors for my sister-in-laws recent altogether become-together. I should mention she considers herself quite the connoisseur & ruby velvet is her favorite. She & her mother declared this the "best cherry velvet cake they'd ever had". I accept to admit, I made this as a 2nd choice, later on the 'existent deal' flopped, turning out dry out & heavy. I couldn't believe how moist, delicious & simple this was. (I used Moist Supreme Golden Butter for the mix/ increased cocoa to 3 Tbsp.) What a winner!
05/06/2009
I am the kind of person who judges a cake by its frosting, and eats the frosting first. That is why I started to requite this 3 stars, but decided to hold back. If yous are looking for a classic Red Velvet Cake, this is not the recipe without some pregnant changes (specifically the frosting). However, if yous are looking for something refreshing and tasty, merely not specifically Red Velvet, give this a try as is. I started giving this 3 stars, because when I was searching for Red Velvet Cake, that was what I was craving... Although this was tasty without any changes, my less than v-star rating is based primarily on the title, every bit it sets oneself up for disappointment to call this Crimson Velvet Cake. This cake+frosting was good, but not at all my experience with a classic "Ruby-red Velvet" Block. That said, I have come up back to this recipe for the cake portion lone. If yous are looking for an piece of cake RVC recipe, I would recommend making the cake equally directed, but add FOUR tablespoons of cocoa instead of 1. Then, employ whatsoever of the traditional cream cheese frosting recipes on this site that telephone call for butter, powdered sugar, and cream cheese. The cake portion of this recipe, when y'all add together more cocoa, is a great and easy way to make the base for Red Velvet Cake. Even so, I will not exist making the frosting again unless I am craving something lighter and less rich than classic RVC. Give thanks yous for the recipe!
02/19/2007
If you've ever had a existent red velvet cake you lot volition be disappointed with this recipe. Adding food coloring does non make any cake get carmine velvet. I did make the cake and it was a good, only it was not a red velvet.
01/02/2002
I searched your files for a special holiday block and settled on this ane. It was spectacular! I made a two layer cake and split the layers so I had four. The beginning time I made information technology the frosting was a scrap skimpy so the side by side time I used 12 oz. of cool whip and information technology was perfect. My whole family thought information technology was the all-time cake they had ever eaten. Mrs. McAl
11/23/2009
This is "oh then proficient" very prissy for holidays be it Christmas or Valentine'south day.
02/09/2007

This cake was prissy and easy to make! I did use another frosting mix (i 8 oz package of cream cheese, i 1/2 cups powdered sugar, i/2 cup unsalted butter, and 1 tsp vanilla extract).

I'm actually only keeping this recipe for the icing portion. It was so simple but then perfect. The block itself was non to my liking but the shower for which I made it seemed to similar it, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. Maybe I just don't like red velvet cake.

This block is wonderful. Yous expect great and it'southward something your friends and family will honey. I like information technology best if you cook the cake in two 8x10 pans and then split the cakes making four layers. Then having the frosting in every layer. It is a huge hit. And looks beautiful.
